Filters as part of the report

Power BI reports can be filtered at the level of the visual, page or entire model, and we place them by dragging the report dimensions into the corresponding fields on the Visualizations/Fields panel. The November 2018 update brought new filters that are now an integral part of the report, and are located in a special menu on the right. For the time being, they are still in the development phase and should, in one of the future versions, become an integral part Power BI.

To be able to see new filters, you must first turn on their view. To do this, you should click on the File tab, then go to Options and Settings and select the Options menu. A dialog box opens where you should choose the Preview Features menu, and then check the New Filter Experience box. After restarting the Power BI Desktop application, you will be able to work with new filters.

Filters are set in the same way as before, as stated at the beginning. In the header of Filters menu there is an icon that resembles an eye. By clicking on it you hide or show filters menu. When you add several visuals to the report their filters will appear in the Visual Level Filters section. They are hidden by default, and by clicking on a similar („eye“) icon we can display or hide them in the Filters menu. Next to it there is another icon that resembles a padlock in appearance, and by clicking on it we can “lock” or “unlock” the value of the filter.

By selecting certain visuals the menu layout changes according to the given filters and if you click on an empty space within the page you will only see filters that are valid at the page level. Within the menu, for each given filter, a search box is available, as well as a list of values ​​in the list. By selecting a one or more values you perform the report filtering. In the upper right corner of each filter there is an icon that resembles an eraser. By clicking on it, the filter is being removed.
