Adding images

There is a saying that “the picture speaks more than 1000 words”. By adding images, reports seem to look more beautiful and striking, and since 2007, Excel has several advanced image processing options. It is possible to change the contrast and brightness of the image, make it sharper or blurry, change colors … Also, we offer a number of filters that can change the image’s appearance in a similar way as we would do in some professional graphics design software.

We add the image to the worksheet after we place on the Insert ribbon, and then choose the Pictures  or Online Pictures option. The first option has always existed in Excel, and we use it if we want to add some of the images from a computer or possibly from a cloud data store. Since version 2013, there is actually no big difference in where images are physically located, you see them as if they were on your computer. The Online Pictures option allows us to find some of the images on the Internet using the Bing Browser. Just type a term that interests you and insert some of the pictures you offer. In the future we will use the image of the bird, which we added from the location on the computer.

Once we have inserted the image, we can move it to another position in the worksheet or change its dimensions. Moving is done by positioning above the image and a cursor with four arrows appears. Clicking on the left mouse button and dragging moves the image. If we position on an image angle, the cursor will also change indicating in which direction we can change the dimensions of the image. By clicking on the edge or corner and dragging, we are changing the dimension of the image until we leave the left mouse button.

After inserting an image, the Format context ribbon will display that contains options for formatting the image layout. Among the last options, on the right, there are two fields (Height, Width) in which we can enter the dimensions (height and width of the image) and in this way change its size.

Within Format ribbon, in its central part, there is a group of Picture Styles options. Within it, there are some styles already offered that we can use to change the look of the picture. There are also three groups of options: Picture Border, Picture Effects, and Picture Layout that can be used to create the style of the image.

The Remove Background option contains several features00101-4that can remove the background image. To the right of it there are groups of options: Corrections, Color and Artistic Effects. Corrections allow you to sharpen or blur the image, as well as to change the ratio of brightness and contrast. Color represents a group of options for changing color and image tones. Artistic Effects offers a group of graphic filters similar to those of the Adobe Photo Shop, whereby we can change the image layout. To the right of these options there are three more useful options. Compress Pictures allows you to compress compressed images so that the captured Excel document is smaller in size. It always reduces image quality, so this option is used if we have uploaded a high quality image. Change Picture allows you to change the added image, while Reset Picture allows you to remove all the changes we made in the image, with or without changing its size.
