Data series within a chart
Charts can be based on one or more data sets. More series are used when we want to show business results by quarter or over a few years. When making such charts, it is important to pay attention to the subtype as it determines their appearance. That is, we should choose whether to make a Stacked or Clustered chart. Also, during work with such charts, users may need to add, edit or delete series of data…
After we have made a chart, clicking on the Design ribbon, then selecting Select Data, we launch a dialog window of the same name where you can see which data is consisted within the series. At the top of the dialog window there is a field in which you can see the cell range on the basis of which the chart is made, and on the left and right sides there are two areas. Here you can see: Legend Entries/Series on the left and the Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels on the right. Clicking on the Switch Row/Column switches the rows and columns within the chart report; i.e., series become labels on the horizontal axis, and labels become series. The shortcut for this option can also be found in the Design ribbon.
How to add a new series? Above the Legend Entry Series, you must first click on the Add button, and then in the dialog that opens, you first specify the name of the series, then the scope in which the data is a new series. Similarly, by clicking the Edit button, we can modify an existing series. Clicking the Delete button will delete the selected series of data.
When we create a new series, it does not have any labels that describe the data it contains (Axis Labels). To add labels, we first need to select a series from the left side of the window dialog box in the Legend Entry Series. Then, in the area to the right Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels, click on the Edit button. In the dialog window that appears it is necessary to define the range in the worksheet where the data labels, describing the chosen series, exist.
At the bottom of the Select Data window is the Hidden and Empty Cells button. Clicking this button opens a dialog window in which it can be adjusted to show hidden values in the series or values that have a zero value: as the gaps in the chart or without the value.
