Power BI alerts

When you create a dashboard within the Power BI service, you may want to be notified if the data reaches a certain predefined value. For this purpose we use Power BI Alerts, and one can only be created for Gauge, Card and KPI visualizations. In the following text you will find out how to use this Power BI service feature.

As part of the report, we added Card visual inside of which we monitor the amount of quantities sold. We pinned it to the dashboard. We should open its context menu, in the upper right corner, and then select the Manage Alerts option.

In the menu on the right, you first need to click on Add Alert Rule. Further you need to specify the name of the alert, and below you will see the dimension (column) to which it refers. Then you add a condition and a threshold. E.g. if the condition is Above and the threshold is 60000, it means that the alert will be triggered when the sum of sold quantities exceeds 60000.

Then you set the Maximum notification frequency, which can be once an hour or once a day. Optionally, you can also select the option for Power BI to send you an email.

When the value inside a visual changes the icon marked with a bell in the upper right corner of the screen will change color and you will be alerted to pay attention to the change.
