Power Pivot charts

Similar as you encountered working with Pivot tables, Power Pivot reports also enable creation of interactive charts. Unlike those made by traditional Pivot charts they can be independent, which means you do not have to be directly connected to the pivot table; you can use data already contained in the Model. Together with slicers and timeline filters they can be used as a tool for creating rich dashboards.

By opening Data model window (PowerPivot , option Manage) you’ll notice a menu within Home ribbon named Pivot Table. This menu offers various reports, amongst them Pivot charts, as single reports or in combination with Pivot tables. By choosing PivotChart option you can create independent Pivot chart.

Similar as when we’re dealing with Pivot charts, you’ll se a blank container in a sheet where you wanted to create a chart. On the right we can see the reporting dimensions (Power Pivot fields), as well as the fields Values, Rows, Columns and Filters. By dragging dimensions (fields, sets, hierarchies, measures, calculated columns) in mentioned fields we populate Pivot chart. As with any other chart contextual toolbars Format and Design are available, we can use them to further influence the appearance of the chart, change the chart type, add trend line, decide whether we want to show some data on the secondary axis …

Power Pivot chart could be made on the basis of an existing Power Pivot report. In this case it would be necessary to position the Analyze toolbar and choose the option PivotChart.
