Microsoft Copilot is a chatbot, based on ChatGPT, and is integrated within many Microsoft services and applications. If you use it in Power BI Desktop reporting platform, it enables you to create quick measures and to generate DAX statements based on natural language. With Microsoft Copilot, creating measures has become much simpler, and you will find out how it is used in the “recipe” that follows.

Before you start using Microsoft Copilot, in the Power BI Desktop settings, within the Preview Features section, you need to select the Quick Measure Suggestions option. Also, within the Microsoft Fabric Admin portal, you should include the options Quick Measure Suggestions and Allow user data to leave their geography.

In the following example, two tables are imported and linked: Items and Transactions. If you go to the Table view and select the Quick Measure option, a panel will appear on the right for creating quick measures. Click on the Suggestions with Copilot option, and then in the text field that appears, write a request in English based on what you want from Copilot to create. You will probably have to repeat the request entry process several times until you get what you want. Simply, the system is not perfect! When you are satisfied with the DAX statement generated by Copilot, click on Add. After that, give the measure a colorful name.

Now you can newly created measure in your reports. For example you can generate a Column visual which displays total revenue by manufacturers.
